mexico on film

This country holds a special place in my heart that grows from year to year. My curiosity to explore more than just the few small surf towns and to venture into deeper reaches has taken a hold of my imagination. There is so much I don’t know, but I yearn to get to know it all on a more intimate level. These images do not these places justice. There is a richness in the culture, the smells of al pastor permeating the air, the feeling of times when I was a young barefoot girl exploring the world for the first time, and the sense of time seeming to suspend and slow to a crawl.

Juxtaposition

The buildings and homes, immaculately painted in vibrant hues, stand as sentinels beside the tangled web of wires clinging to old telephone poles. This juxtaposition of the old and new whispers a tale of a city in transition. It’s in this blend of history and progress where the true charm and allure lie, a delicate dance that I hope will forever enchant this part of the world.

Frozen In Time

What is the essence of progress? Is it the purging of old ways and old things? Or is it the art of enhancing what we possess, renewing without further scraping more precious resources from the earth? Is it the sacrifice of nature for the city's pursuit of symmetry, or does true beauty reside in weaving nature into our world, planning harmoniously with its inherent design? Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder.

What can we learn from nature? Is a pickup truck more valuable because of its shine? How have we chosen what holds value and what does not?

Casa Ballena

Spanish for whale - This place has been a safe haven during my last few trips to Mexico. Here, I've found solace, recharging amidst the beauty, far from the rush of daily life. I've been able to be with myself and reconnect both old and new friends.

When we get the chance to truly slow down, we realize what our deepest values are. For me, being fully present with those I love makes my life feel worth living. It’s the small moments that make life the sweetest: sharing a story, a laugh, a cry, or bonding over the fact that inevitably, we will all get the “cleanse” at some point or another. IYKYK

Glimmers

These small towns have art hidden in every nook and cranny. They are glimmers of who people are. Each stroll into town, I would pass by a painting of a charming little bird, and its sight never failed to fill my heart with joy.

Te Amo México

Thank you, Mexico, for all the gifts. I await the chance to explore you further, to delve into both your beauty and your imperfections. To truly understand and cherish somthing, one must embrace not just the virtues, but the flaws, and still remain.

I've used a small collection of cameras to capture these images:

  • Mostly with Portra 400

  • Roleicord - Borrowed from a friend

  • Canon K2 Rebel - My first 35mm camera, which I bought when I was 15

  • Canon Point-and-Shoot - I bought this for $20 at a flea market in Sweden; I just reclaimed it from my golf bag, where I thought I had lost it
